Physicians losing ground

A recent AMA study found that doctors spend 14 percent of the fees they receive from insurance companies and Medicare on the process of collecting those fees, Sadly, about 30 percent of over 5 billion claims generated annually, are rejected, and surprisingly, only 50 percent of the rejected claims are ever resubmitted [Walker et al, 2004]. Physicians are giving up this revenue in addition to losing revenue because of the annual cuts of allowed fees.

Anesthesia billing is the most complicated.

Billing for aesthesia services is the most complex of all medical specialties. Anesthesia charge calculations include a time element, thus causing every single administration of anesthesia to a patient to carry a unique charge. The doctor must choose from among 17,000 surgical and diagnostic codes required for billing. By comparison, most other surgical specialties refer to as few as 15 codes. Anesthesiologists also perform related procedures in non-O/R parts of the hospital and additionally must manage up to 4 nurse anesthetists (CRNA’s) at a time. The data for all of these activities and services must be accurately captured in order to become reimbursable.
